New types of worker, new types of working

The new types of worker programme is about how organisations and those working for them can work differently to deliver services to individuals which offer a person more independence, choice and flexibility. To help achieve this organisations and professions from the same and different sectors need to re-design their workforce. This results in different ways of working and sometimes the emergence of new roles.

New types of working might:

  • work across traditional boundaries - between social care and health, education, housing, health and justice
  • work across traditional service areas - residential and home based services
  • work across client groups - adults and children

Skills for Care North West commissioned consultants to map examples of this types of activity and the results are outlined in the executive summary of mapping exercise

Working with Personal Assistants (PAs)

Working with PAs is a priority piece of work and Skills for Care are working closely with the Joint Improvement Partnership (JIP) North West to progress it.

A key aspect of the work is understanding the development of the PA role in the North West. Work is underway to capture a number of stories from PAs in the form of case studies. An information resource will be produced which will highlight PAs employment experiences and issues. The development of quality standards, which would ensure a more consistent approach to the quality of service experienced by people using services and those employing PAs, are planned.
