Autism strategy - public consultation launched
6/5/2009
The Department of Health are working to develop an autism strategy that tackles the barriers faced by adults with an autistic spectrum condition (ASC) and their families. The strategy will look at the needs of all adults with autism from across the spectrum (including Asperger syndrome and high functioning autism). It is crucial that adults with an ASC and their families receive the right support to allow them to live full lives.
The strategy will be developed following a consultation. The consultation considers five key themes for delivering change – health, social inclusion, choice and control, awareness raising and training, and access to training and employment.
The consultation will run for 20 weeks and seeks views from people with autism, their families, their carers and those involved in delivering services, to make sure that the final strategy makes a real difference on the ground. Phil Hope MP said of the consultation, "People with Autistic Spectrum Conditions should have the same rights and freedom to enjoy life as everyone else. "I want as many people as possible to respond to the consultation and let us know about their experiences, in their communities."
The consultation will run from 29 April 2009 to 15 September 2009.
