Skills for Care launches principles for workforce redesign

Skills for Care has launched new principles for workforce redesign setting out seven ways employers can help their staff meet the challenges of personalisation.

The principles were launched by Skills for Care CEO Andrea Rowe at the Children's and Adult Services conference in Liverpool providing detailed advice for managers about the key areas they will need to consider when implementing new ways of working to meet the challenges of the personalisation agenda.

They are a practical framework for driving workforce reform and employers can use the principles to audit how they are managing the transformation process in their organisation.

The seven principles, supported by web-based links to further elearning and practical consultancy from Skills for Care, are:

  • Take a whole systems view of organisational change
  • Recognise how people, organisations and partnerships respond differently to change
  • Nurture champions, innovators and leaders
  • Engage people in the process - acknowledge and value their experience
  • Be aware of the ways adults learn
  • Change Minds and change systems
  • Develop workforce strategies that support transformation and recognise the shape of resource available in the local community.

"The Personalisation agenda is clearly going to lead to significant changes in how many organisations operate and the way their staff deliver care so we've developed these easy-to-use principles to help the sector manage those changes effectively", says Skills for Care CEO Andrea Rowe.

"The principles recognise the simple fact that the quality of any service delivered by social care organisations is directly linked to the skills, knowledge, expertise, values and attitudes of the people who make up the workforce."

"They also recognise that employees have a significant part to play in any transformation that takes place and the principles will help managers fully involve their workers in any changes."
